YURYEV NATIONAL ACADEMY OF AGRАRIAN SCIENCES OF UKRAINE popup.description2 To form maize and sunflower collections, it is important to find and involve carriers of valuable traits adapted to the climatic conditions of Ukraine with wide adaptive capacity, then to investigate them for a set of traits, select sources and donors of valuable traits for use in breeding. The aim of the project was to develop a methodology for creating and maintaining a genetic bank of maize and sunflower, to expand the genetic diversity, to select sources and donors of these crops, to develop and register core, working and trait collections for effective use in research, breeding and training programs, and to provide their long-term storage. Maize and sunflower collections containing 6,171 maize accessions and 577 maize accessions, respectively, were formed. 64 maize lines-sources of drought tolerance and valuable economic features were created. 1,530 packages with maize accessions were delivered to research, breeding and education institutions of Ukraine; 46 packages with accessions were shared with other countries; 230 packages with sunflower accessions were distributed all over Ukraine; 15 - to foreign genebanks. 102 maize accessions and 17 sunflower accessions were used in breeding in 2015. According to "Regulations on the Registration of Collection and Plant Gene Pool Accessions in the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine", a special collection of maize lines, genetic collection of Zea mays L.; working maize and sunflower collections, trait collection of sunflower varieties were registered over the period of 2011 - 2015. Sources of valuable economic traits of maize, sunflower, sunflower varieties as donors of confectionery seeds were registered. "Method of Classification of Sunflower Accessions by Protein Content in Seed Kernels", which includes determination of protein content in kernels of ripened seeds and distributes sunflower accessions on a scale consisting of nine classes, (Patent No 61248 dd 11.07.2011), and a database of genealogy of self-pollinated maize lines, which is part of the information system "Plant Gene Pool of Ukraine" containing the main passport features (Certificate No 46244 dd 05.11.2012), were patented. A catalogue of the genetic value of self-pollinated maize lines was developed and published. The research results for the period of 2011-2015 were published in 37 scientific papers.
