YURYEV NATIONAL ACADEMY OF AGRАRIAN SCIENCES OF UKRAINE popup.description2 Formation of the genetic bank of leguminous and groat crops implies the expansion of species and intra-species diversity, systematization of information on the value of the genetic material, selection of sources and donors of useful and identifying traits for breeding, research and educational programs, as well as investigations of wild and related species of leguminous and groat crops for use in breeding to infuse the modern varieties with high adaptability to environmental conditions. Based on the above, the project aim was a theoretical rationale of formation principles of trait, special and genetic collections of leguminous and groat crops. This will be achieved through the development of a methodology for formation of a genetic bank of leguminous and groat crops in Ukraine. Collections of the gene pool comprising 10,129 legume accessions were formed (pea - 2,676 accessions; soybean - 2,240, kidney bean - 2,260, chickpea - 1,869, lentil - 1,025, vigna - 51, dolichos - 7, asparagus pea - 1) and 1,454 groat accessions (millet - 1,412 accessions, Turkestan millet - 19, panic - 10, Japanese millet - 9, crab grass - 4). Over the period of 2011-2015, 3,285 packages with legume accessions and 264 packages with groat accessions were transferred to breeding, research and education institutions as well as to other users. Of them, 121 pea accessions, 451 soybean accessions, 652 kidney bean accessions, 33 chickpea accessions, 3 lentil accessions, and 42 millet accessions were used in breeding. The comprehensive study identified sources of valuable economic features, which were included in trait collections, and pea, soybean and kidney bean accessions with identifying genes. A basic kidney bean collection, a genetic pea collection, trait collections of vegetable pea, chickpea, lentil, special collections of millet and soybean, working collections of millet and soybean (3) were formed and registered; 20 pea accessions, 1 soybean accession and 2 lentil accessions were registered as valuable for breeding. Three patents for utility model ("Method of Simulation of Seed Aging in the Legume Family (Fabaceae)", "Method of Classification of Pea Accessions by Protein Content in Seeds", "Method of Classification of Soybean Accessions by Protein and Fat Contents in Seeds") and Copyright Registration Certificate for the object "Trait Database of the Lentil Gene Pool Accessions by Distinguishing Features." The Laboratory staff have 5% authorship in soybean varieties 'Estafeta', 'Sprytna', 'Baika', 'Veresneva', 'Kobza', 'Pysanka', 'Raiduha', 'Krasunia', 'Vyshyvanka', millet variety 'Bohatyrske' and participated in the creation of pea varieties 'Metsenat', 'Geyser', 'Korvet', 'Haiduk'. A method of formation and maintenance of collections of the legume and groat gene pool accessions was developed. As a result, guidelines for studying legume collection accessions were prepared for publication. The research results of 2011-2015 were published in 76 scientific papers.
