The group of synthetics chemists led by Professor Thomas Hunt from the University of Constance (Germany)was attracted for the project purpose. Consequently, the new class of difurylethen- and terphenilazol-based diarylethene molecules with improved optical properties were synthesized. This allowed to start development of coating for glass based on gold nanoparticles covered by photochromic molecules. The project involved the glass surface functionalization by colloidal gold nanoparticles with the size of 17 ± 2 nm with further study of its optical properties. It was found that the functionalization of gold nanoparticles on glass surface by photochromic furan-based diarylethen derivatives allows changing of the optical properties of glass.We demonstrated the variation of the optical transparency of functionalized glass under the variation of UV/visible light illumination. This is achieved by changing the dielectric constant of gold nanoparticles environment due to induced photochromic reaction of molecules chemically grafted on gold nanoparticles.
