A method of manufacturing electrodes based on tungsten carbide with highly extended surface and with a porous structure was developed by sintering of WC powder, including Ag or V addition, on a nickel grid. The performed investigations of the kinetics of hydrogen evolution at the developed electrodes from 1 M KOH and H2SO4 solutions showed that cathodic hydrogen evolution at carbide electrodes from acid solution occurs with overpotential of approximately 2 times smaller than from alkaline solution. The most active of the investigated electrodes in hydrogen evolution from acid solution is carbide electrode with silver addition, and from alkaline solution electrode with vanadium addition. The principal possibility and prospects of using developed carbide electrodes for hydrogen production in PEM electrolyzer with simultaneous anodic synthesis of ammonium persulfate were shown.
