Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 Causes for failure of circumferential welded joints of mail pipeline pipes with service life of 15-46 years built from low-carbon steels (17GS, 19G, 14KhGS, 15GSTYu) and controlled-rolled steel (X70), which were used in gas- and oil pipelines of 530-1420 mm diameter, were inadmissible defects, which formed already during performance of assembly-welding operations in pipeline construction, or were the result of service conditions, namely corrosion and force factors. To eliminate the causes for development of hazardous defects in circumferential welds, requirements to fabrication and control of welded joint quality were developed or corrected, as regards the accuracy of edges fit up, inadmissible defects, joint geometries, mechanical characteristics, etc. Rules of performance of operations on arc welding and quality control of circumferential joints were prepared, the introduction of which will allow lowering the risk of main pipeline failure.
