The goal of the paper is to study the mechanical behavior of the glasses and ceramics in normal environmental conditions under their mechanical loading at macro- and micro-levels and also to reveal special features of fracture of their surface and subsurface layer. The method of investigation is the study of the fracture resistance of brittle materials by flaking the edges of their specimens and also by linear and progressive micro-scratching their surfaces.
