Despite exciting achievements in development of active optical elements, relatively slow (? 0.1 s) response to electric field limits their application in adaptive optical devices, such as light beam correctors, adaptive lenses, controlled phase retardation devices, wave front correctors, etc. We suggest new approach for development of fast adaptive LC optical elements. It is based on using novel materials - stressed liquid crystals, which provide ultrafast switching of LC elements. Goal of the work is to develop and test an experimental setup for fabrication of stressed liquid crystals. Object of the research: composite systems of liquid crystals with photosensitive polymer - stressed liquid crystals (SLC). Stressed liquid crystals consist of liquid crystal matrix with built-in polymer grid. Orientation of polymer grid and LC is determined by mechanical shear of one of the cell substrate relatively to the other in liquid crystals sandwich-cell. Shear deformation of polymer grid leads to reorientation of liquid crystal. During the project the following major results have been obtained: Improved experimental setup for fabricating samples of stressed liquid crystals is designed and created. The setup provides uniform shear of liquid crystal cell substrates up to 120-150 microns with both cell and polymer grid being intact, allowing to obtain highly stressed states of composite samples. As a result of shearing initially opaque cell becomes transparent. Using composite materials and new experimental setup parameters of SLC system will be optimized and corresponding samples will be fabricated. Prototypes of active optical elements based on SLC: correctors of laser beam light field, arrays of adaptive fast micro-lenses, adaptive fast macro-lenses are suggested and developed. All the results are obtained for the first time, they will contribute to development of ultrafast adaptive optical liquid crystal elements for different applications.
