The approach allowing of studying of dynamics of the photo-induced ring closing photochromic reaction of diarylethene in the femtosecond time range is developed. It is found that the functional groups necessary for chemical binding of molecules to the surface of a metal electrode, affect the rate of closure of the photochromic nucleus. The theoretical calculation of the energy levels of correspondent molecules in the ground and excited states were carried out to explain observed effects. It is shown that ring-closing reaction involves several successive intramolecular processes associated with redistribution of the electron density. Therefore, taking into account difference nature of the functional groups (electron donor or acceptor) of the molecules, the monitored dynamics of photochromic reaction that involved hybridization of molecules orbitals shows a different character.
