The problem is solved by a comprehensive analysis of the various categories of material culture; these are ochre, ochre stained artefacts, engraved and perforated personal ornaments dated to the chronological period between 130 000 and 25 000 years ago. Verification and detailed description of the oldest occurrences of non-utilitarian (spiritual, symbolic) activity of the ancient population of the territory of Ukraine is conducted in aspects of culture, history and technology. In particular, the objects recovered at the sites of Zaskalnaya VI (Kolosovskaya) Zaskalnaya V, Prolom II, Kiik-Koba and others were studied. The data concerning the technical and morphological features of studied objects, especially technology of manufacture, some supplementary features of raw materials were obtained and accumulated. The deliberate character and probably non-utilitarian nature of a number of bone and ochre artefacts recovered mainly in the context of Crimean Neanderthal sites was revealed. New objects of non-utilitarian activity of Crimean Neanderthals are also evidenced. Some selected objects from the context of the Middle Paleolithic occupations of the western (Pronyatin), northern (Mukhovets) and south-western Ukraine (Andreevka) were preliminary examined. As a result of preliminary analysis a substantial database has been obtained which further study will be conducted in more detail.
