The purpose of work is to work out approaches of cultivation of highly productive beech and spruce forests and ensure their multipurpose use taking into account environmentally oriented forestry based on the characteristics of the formations of the structure of primeval systems of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Research methods are comparative ecology, forestry and taxation, biometry. The paper highlights the processes of formation of the spatial structure of beech forests and old-growth spruce stands in a natural way, especially natural regeneration of tree species, foreign experience of using major non-continuous clear-cuttings and reformation cuttings, formation of highly productive and biologically sustainable forest stands of spruce and beech. To approximate the diameter distribution of these stands it is appropriate to apply the three- and seven parametric bimodal distribution function by Weibull (for primeval ecosystems). The beech stands that were not affected by human activities is typical random type of arrangement of trees with a trend towards a uniform. Formation of the structure of beech stands is influenced more by intensity of impact than its nature. Beech stands, which will be restored naturally on clear-cuttings in production forests, and forest stands that formed after solid windfalls in conservation forests have similar spatial structure. Dead wood with different volumes is present in all beech and spruce stands of the Carpathians, but its reserves vary considerably depending on the stage of development of forests and in old-growth forests depending on the intensity of the factors. Virgin stands of protected areas are characterized by a significant accumulation of dead wood. In such stands next to a large numbers of dead trees with small diameter there are also a significant amount of dead trees with big diameter. Production forests are characterized by accumulation of dead trees with mostly small diameters and, consequently, low stocks of standing dead wood. Virgin forests are characterized by a good natural regeneration. The paper proposes measures for a gradual increase of areas of old growth protection and production forests, conducting close to nature silviculture by applying a gradual and selective cuttings in order to ensure natural regeneration of beech and spruce forests for keeping permanent forest environment, obtaining considerable stocks of large-sized timber.
