Modes of operation of accelerators were studied for three types working gases (hydrogen, helium, nitrogen). Spatial and temporal distributions of the energy density, plasma pressure, and velocity of the plasma streams of various types’ gases have been obtained. The increase of microhardness of the studied structural steels up to 4 times due to modification of materials surface layers was achieved as result of plasma treatment. The thickness of layer with increased microhardness is 25-30 microns. The modified layer is a fine structure that is resistant to etching. Influence of plasma stream on changes the elemental composition of the material surface was analyzed. Effective introduction of nitrogen in the material structure occur during the interaction of the plasma stream with the surface of the material due to diffusion in surface layer which is in the molten state.
