Identified preventive effect of carotenoids and bioflavonoids in modeling age-related cataracts. Application carotenoid preparations (lutein and zeaxathin) and bioflavonoids, especially quercetin, slows the development of primary opacities in the lens of experimental animals. It was found that the carotenoids and bioflavonoids help to restore the thiol status and reduce the intensity of lipid peroxidation processes, have a pronounced stabilizing effect on the state of the enzymatic antioxidant system in a simulation of senile cataract. Thus, superoxide dismutase using carotenoids was higher by 77.1%, and catalase - 24.6%, and in the case of bioflavonoids observed increased activity of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase, 64%, 59% and 21% in the lens and 44%, 32% and 19% chamber humidity, respectively, in a chamber with respect to the irradiated animals. It was found that the topical application of quercetin stabilizes the optical properties of the lens in patients with early age-related cataract: within two years of observation showed a significant decrease in the degree of light scattering and, starting from 12 - month period of observation, visual acuity clearly exceed the performance of the control group. The use of quercetin in patients with age-related cataract in the period prior to surgical treatment, has a significant activating effect on the degree of activity of antioxidant enzymes lens and chamber humidity. It is proved that in modeling allergic anterior uveitis significantly decreases the activity of the antioxidant enzyme systems in the iris and the anterior chamber of rabbits: 30.0% glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase 23.2% and 26.2% catalase, respectively, compared with control group . Patients with anterior uveitis in the blood and lacrimal fluid violated thiol status and the intensity of lipid peroxidation: thiol glutathione level was 81.2% and 70.5%, oxidized glutathione - 122.4% and 131.7% malondialdehyde - 125.2% and 136.4% and diene conjugates - 118.9% and 128.7%, respectively, relative to control. The use of quercetin in conventional treatment of patients with anterior uveitis promoted restoration of the thiol status and reduce the intensity of lipid peroxidation processes in the blood and in the tear fluid.
