The purpose of research - the study of chemical reactions in the intumescent system melamine / ammonium polyphosphate / pentaerythritol / polyvinyl acetate in the presence of montmorillonite at high temperatures. Infrared spectroscopic studies identified a basic chemical conversion intumescent system melamine / ammonium polyphosphate / pentaerythritol / polyvinyl acetate at temperatures 250 and 350 ° C in the presence of montmorillonite. It is shown that montmorillonite accelerates decomposition of ammonium polyphosphate and carbonyl derivatives formed by thermal degradation of the polymer. It is found that montmorillonite catalyzes degradation processes ammonium polyphosphate and consequently, accelerate the condensation of pentaerythritol and ammonium polyphosphate retaining ammonium polyphosphate polymeric structure to form a heat-resistant structure of the coke layer. These findings allow us to recommend the introduction of montmorillonite in the intumescent coating formulations, as an effective and environmentally friendly additive. The results are of scientific importance for the development of ideas about the mechanisms of chemical reactions in the intumescent type systems and methods for reducing flammability of polymers using ecological approaches. The practical significance of the research is the fact that the use of nanoclays as functional additives can simultaneously improve the flame retardant efficiency, environmental characteristics and performance of materials and intumescent coating type.
