It is found that the soil drought equally inhibited the rate of photosynthesis in both forms, but water use efficiency in the transformed plants declined less and was 46% higher than the original line. The intensity of dark respiration significantly decreased in both forms, but was approximately 2 times higher in plants with reduced expression of proline dehydrogenase, which indicates better preservation of energy and plastic metabolism of leaves cells. Water stress caused a significant increase in antioxidant enzyme activity in leaves of wild-type plants, however in transformed plants, the activity of superoxide dismutase increased only. The increase in leaf temperature decreased less the rate of photosynthesis in the leaves of transformed plants than the original lines. Thus, the adaptive capacity of the photosynthetic apparatus of plants with reduced expression of proline dehydrogenase was improved comparing to the original form due to increased activities of respiration and chloroplast's antioxidant system.
