The greater biomass accumulation in the period of vegetative growth in these varieties contributed to the increase in the radiation use efficiency by their crops during the period from heading to milky-wax ripeness, a rise in grains number per unit of soil area and higher yields. It was found that the maximum rate of photosynthesis of penultimate leaf in modern winter wheat varieties was higher than that of flag leaf, but during the grain filling it sharply decreased and a leading role in supplying assimilates to the ear belongs to the flag leaf. The ontogenetical dynamics of the photosynthesis rate of flag leaf was closely related with the nitrogen content changes. It was shown that the intensity of flag leaf transpiration during the grain filling was reduced less than the rate of photosynthesis, which could be explained by the weak dependence of the state of stomatal apparatus on the nitrogen content in the leaf.
