Optical measurements and theoretical modeling were used to investigate nanometric mteallic thin films, demonstrating their sensitivity to the influence of noxious gases, in particular, carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, which are emitted in many industrial processes. Also, multifunctional nanocomposites made of epoxy resin and nanofiller (such as carbon nanotubes and boron nitride nanoparticles) were synthesized and shown to be sensitive to high energy radiation. These materials show the potential to be used as a protective shield and as a radiation monitor, where dosages could be determined either by measuring the changes in either the optical or electrical properties.
