An object. (Object-subject field) study - landscape and biotic diversity of the territory of Ukraine, system of protected areas of different rank of Ukraine. Purpose - to identify gaps in the existing network of protected areas in different natural zones of Ukraine, to develop a complex procedure aimed at identifying areas for prospective network of protected areas, based on the grounds of a combination of geographical, botanical and zoological principles and criteria of landscape and biotic diversity. Research methods - geographical, landscape-ecological, biogeographical, geobotanical, zoological, zoogeographical. Results of the study. The state of nature protection in different natural zones of Ukraine at the level of physical and geographical provinces on the basis of the latest scheme of physiographic zoning of the National Atlas of Ukraine were evaluated. The gaps in the existing system of protected areas of different rank of Ukraine were identified. A complex assessment procedure for the protected areas in different natural zones of Ukraine was worked out. It based on a combination of geographical, botanical and zoological principles and criteria of landscape and biotic diversity taking into account the socio-economic realities of the state, features of spatial development of the country and its regions. The approaches to the assessment of the connection of the network of protected areas were created. Schematic map showing the area with a "deficit" of protected areas was made. The system of zoological and botanical criteria and methods for assessment of the territory for the creation of new protected areas were determined. The role of landscape study research in particular geoinformation landscapes mapping using remote sensing data in the assessment of the territory for the purposes of land conservation by determining the changes in the landscape (their current state) and indicators of landscape diversity were elaborated. The features of accounting social significance of the territory, primarily scientific, historical, cultural and aesthetic in nature reserves, the necessity of taking into account the concept of ecosystem services for the development and functioning of the system of protected areas in Ukraine were developed. The common mistakes concerned with creating protected areas were identified. The basic mechanisms and driving forces of implementation of the projects of creating protected areas, in particular the socio-economic and institutional factors, the state of formation of civil society, the level of development of scientific and educational sectors, the country's participation in international cooperation were found out.
