The historical genesis of theoretical conceptualizations of civil society is studied. The emergence, institutionalization and development of civil society in Ukraine is analyzed using empirical data. The heuristic potential of the concept of "symbolic universe" is explored. The concepts of permanent struggle of symbolic universes, of hierarchy symbolic universe domains, and of symbolic enclaves are elaborated. The trends of (de)legitimation and of the public's perception of the prospects for modernization of social order in contemporary Ukraine are studied empirically.
