Kyrdyumov Institute for Metall Physics of N.A.S. of Ukraine popup.description2 Based on ab initio calculations the fundamental knowledge about the electronic structure and magnetic properties of a series of diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) was obtained, as well as their experimental x-ray absorption and magnetic circular (XMCD) and linear dichroism spectra were explained. Examples which were examined in detail are III-V, IV-VI, II-VI, and III-VI DMSs such as (Ga,Mn)As, (Ga,Mn)N and (Ga,Gd)N, (Ge,Mn)Te, (Ti,Mn)O2, (Zn,Mn)O, (Zn,Co)O, (Zn,Cu)O, and Co:In2O3. The effect of interstitial transition metal atoms and oxygen vacancies was found to be crucial for the XMCD in the (Ga,Mn)As, (Zn,Mn)O, (Zn,Co)O DMSs. Mixed valance and surface effects were found to be very important for the magnetic ordering and spectroscopic properties of (Zn,Cu)O DMSs.
