The investigated materials have been classified into four main groups with considering the mechanism of deformation and failure mechanism under friction and wear. It was found that the changes in temperature, certain frequency vibration act and phase transitions under friction can shift material to another group. Each of the four groups characterized by a certain dislocation structure at the surface layers; the wear mechanism and the wear rate is determined by indentified formulas. Proposed classification allows to more detail understanding the wear mechanism and optimized the structure and mechanical properties to improve the resistance of materials of parts of transport devices and other equipment.
