The objects of the study are the Black Sea populations of marine mammals. The purpose of the current research work was to assess the status of the Black Sea populations of marine mammals in 2016. The report presents materials from cetacean studies that were performed using coastal-based and vessel-based visual observations, as well as the method of photo-identification of individuals, which was first used in the Ukrainian waters of the northwestern part of the Black Sea. Studies of the state of cetacean populations showed that they were unevenly distributed in the Black Sea, especially the bottlenose dolphins, their encounters rate was extremely low in the open waters, and their overall occurrence was also low. The short-beaked common dolphin dominated in all waters, but the sizes of its groups were smaller than in previous studies performed in the 1970-s - 1980-s. The importance of this type of offshore waters of the north-western part of the Black Sea, including its urbanized coastal water areas, was shown. The harbour porpoises were also encountered in the open and in the coastal areas of the sea, but their distribution patterns were mosaic, and their group sizes were mostly small. Cetacean stranding rates in the northwestern part of the Black Sea were small in comparison with other areas. The results of the studies allowed us to recognize the water areas, which are important for the presence of cetaceans and promising for their further protection, such as: the area of the Dzharylgachsky Bay and Dzharylgach Island, waters near the Zmiinyi Island and the delta of the Danube River. Results from the research on the state and dynamics of the populations of cetaceans, which are the highest link in the trophic chains in marine ecosystems and important indicators of their status, will help to develop the scientific basis for the protection of these vulnerable and endangered marine mammals.
