Objective: To develop scientifically grounded methodology of identifying the affecting factors and risks assessment concerning public health and the environment associated with the development of hydrocarbon deposits of unconventional origin and identifying the ways and means of public awareness about the mentioned risks. As a result of the work, the analysis of developments in the industry, as well as national and international legislative and regulatory support of the works on risk assessment, was carried out. The new technology of risk assessment in the development of shale gas, taking into account all environmental and technological aspects was developed. The approach to risk assessment taking into account the development stages was presented. Also, the study proposed to use risk prioritization approach for their evaluation. The magnitude of the potential threats and the expected frequency of threats would be divided into categories based on expert assessments and analysis of hydraulic fracturing in industrial conditions. Research methods to identify and calculate the risk index of specific factors at each stage of deposit development were carried out. The range of indicators for phased risk assessment in shale gas development was developed.
