The aim of investigations: optimization of the military system of radiation safety based on modern radiological concepts, adapted to typical scenarios of radiation exposure in military practice. Methods and equipment: informational search through the literature data, analysis and synthesis of the information, mathematic modeling, personal computers. Theoretical and practical results: Possible scenarios of radiation exposure in military practice in Ukraine were classified; that included active battle actions and resultant emergency situations. New information-biophysical model was developed for the assessment of radiation damage grade in military troops in various scenarios of radiation exposure. It was found that current estimates of early radiation-induced clinical effects in majority analyzed exposure scenarios are inconsistent with modern radiobiological concepts. The sectors of military system of radiation safety requiring a revision were identified. Novelty: The list of scenarios of radiation exposure in combat conditions with accompanying prognoses of clinical aftermath was assembled for the first time. The newly developed model for the first time allowed assessing the radiation-induced losses in troops considering the maximum number of factors, which form the radiobiological effect. For the first time in military radiology a sufficient distinction in radiation damage grade was shown for exposure conditions, for which the difference of induced clinical effect had been earlier considered insignificant. The effectiveness of implementation: The study showed that currently applicable norms of radiation exposure of military personnel, introduced long ago during tests of the nuclear weapons of the first generation (atomic ammos), now require revision, and in some cases - a radical change for making them compatible with the modern radiobiological paradigm. Areas of applications: military system of radiation safety, radiation medicine, radiation hygiene, radiobiology, NBC troops, military hospitals, radiation protection hospitals.
