The aim of this work is to improve the properties of sand-clay molding and core mixtures by the use of a solution of polystyrene in turpentine as a binder. Research methods testing the mechanical properties of the molding compounds were carried out in a wet and dry condition on standard specimens according to standard procedures; the residual strength was determined by the method of thermal shock. According to the literature analysis the use of polystyrene and forming of its waste was made. Recycling of these wastes solves the environmental, economic, and a number of technical problems. Experiments in which mixtures contained quartz sand, a solution of polystyrene in turpentine and clay were carried out. Optimal clay content - 1.5 - 3 %. It is shown that the investigated compounds have the raw strength at 0.05 MPa. After drying of the test mixture, with a solution of polystyrene in turpentine and clay have a tensile strength up to 2.1 MPa. The mixture, which was injected a solution of waste polystyrene and clay, has slight attorney, satisfactory gas permeability. These compounds have small fallibility and residual strength. The study of the influence of small additions of a solution of polystyrene in turpentine on the properties of sand-clay mixtures showed that the test mixture compared with the control have less fallibility and residual strength.
