Aim - to elucidate the impact of ionizing radiation different doses on the duration of spermatogenesis suppression and the peculiarities of hormone production of male rat gonads after whole body and local irradiation of animals. Methods - radiobiological, microscopic, spectrophotometric, morphologic, ELISA and statistical techniques. Dynamics of quantitative changes in repopulation of testicular seminiferous epithelium of laboratory rats by Sertoli somatic cells as well as germ cells, namely A-spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and sperms, depending on the dose of whole body (1,0 and 2,0 Gy) and local gamma-irradiation of testicules in the period 12-36 weeks post-radiation was found out. It has been shown that local gamma-irradiation in the doses 1,0-2,0 Gy resulted in partial killing of differentiated A-spermatogonia and abatement of repopulation index of seminiferous tubules, latter being reflected in ample deprivation of spermatogenic epithelium in a number of tubules along with suppression of spermatids and sperm formation in other ones. In the courses of post-radiation period of 36 weeks the restoration of testicular spermatogenic epithelium in the range 75-85 % after irradiation by 1,0-2,0 Gy as in local as in total mode took place. Concurrently the doses of 4,0 and 7,0 Gy caused the long-term suppression of regeneration and differentiation of germ cells that embodied in emerging of sever oligozoospermia together with azoospermia and, correspondingly, in essential decrease of sperm production, the latter being on the background level after irradiation by 7,0 Gy and in the range 10-15 % - by 4,0 Gy. Inhibine B and the quantitative ration testosterone/estradiol were shown to be the predictive biomarkers of spermatogenesis proceeding under ionizing irradiation.
