Purpose - to develop a method for evaluation of sunflower breeding material for heat resistance of sprouts by peroxidase specific activity, to assess relationships between these parameters and with resistance to high temperature in the field setting and to improve selection schemes of starting material for sunflower hybrid breeding. Methods - field, laboratory, statistical. The genetic diversity of sunflower accessions by response to stress parameters (temperature, heat exposure duration, sprout age) was described. Optimal parameters of temperature mode and heat exposure of sunflower sprouts were established. Treatment at 48°C for 0.5 min was proposed for thermal hardening. 3-minute treatment at 48°C was proposed as a stressful one. The ratio of peroxidase specific activity after thermal treatment without thermal hardening to the control (no treatment) ranged from 79.28% to 108.28%; with thermal hardening - from 83.95% to 120.53%. The largest rise in peroxidase was recorded for accessions of heat resistance groups IV-V; the least rise - for accessions of heat resistance groups I-II. In the experiment with thermal treatment of 5-day-old sprouts after thermal pre-hardening, the peroxidase specific activity significantly increased related to the control (thermal hardening, no heat treatment) in lines Kh 225 B and Kh 751 B, which were suggested as lines - testers of high heat resistance, and significantly decreased in lines Kh 88 B and Kh 400 B, which were suggested as lines - testers of low heat resistance.
