The tools of the research are the numerical simulation, laboratory experiment and engineering approach. The pattern of erosion of large sand pits is derived. The localized pit is obtained transforms into a complex system of holes and dumps that moves together with the water flow. Broadening the bottom form across the flow causes generation of large-scale erosion zones here. Time and spatial characteristics of sand pit erosion depending on pit geometrical parameters as well as on velocity and depth of water flow are obtained.
