The increase microhardness for construction steels achieved as a result of plasma treatment (up to four times by modifying the surface layer of the material). The thickness of the modified layer is 25-50 microns. The correlation between changes in the micro-hardness of the modified layer and an increase wear resistance has been investigated. Wear resistance as a result of plasma treatment increases even in an environment where microhardness substantially unchanged. Influence of plasma streams on the elemental structure of the surface layer of the material was analyzed. Diffusion of nitrogen into the structure of the material (the plasma-surface interaction) occurs by diffusion, when the surface layer is molten.
