It is find that at application of thermal loads close to the melting point of tungsten, the morphology of the surface develops mainly due to the melting process and repeated solidification during plasma treatment. The modified layer includes a mixture of the coating material and the substrate. It was shown the possibility of effectively alloy the substrate material with tungsten. The concentration of tungsten in a modified layer achieved several atomic percent as a result of plasma treatment. The depth of penetration of tungsten into the modified layer of the steel sample is estimated at 0.4 ?m. A local increase of the concentration of tungsten in the near-surface layer will could significantly reduce the sputtering coefficient of the steel surface. The predictive estimates will be done on the base of the results obtained regarding the functioning of the divertor elements and the first wall of the thermonuclear reactor, which will be in contact with powerful plasma flows.
