Object of research is economy of Ukraine in the XI - early XXI century. Subject of research is the birth and development of entrepreneurial activity, the deformation of the institute of entrepreneurship at various stages of the development of the economic environment. Methods of research are institutional-evolutionary approach, systemic historical-empirical and problem-logical analysis, interdisciplinary approach, application of economic comparative studies, historiographical synthesis. Results: the general concept of evolution of entrepreneurship as a holistic institutional complex, the basis of a market economy and a driving force for economic development in Ukrainian land. It was revealed the historical patterns and national characteristics of entrepreneurship's birth, formation and transformation. It was substantiated a qualitatively new approach to studying the history of economy based on the methods of evolutionary economic theory and institutional history in the Ukrainian scientific literature. For the first time it was developed a historical-economic concept of institutional interaction between the state and business structures at the stages of formation of national markets (XV-XVII centuries), market and anti-market transformations of the Ukraine's economy in the composition of different states (XVIII-XX centuries). The above-mentioned discloses the formation patterns and deformation factors of national entrepreneurship as a socio-economic phenomenon and a model of innovation activity; defines the priorities, main directions and results of government policy on the development of the economy of Ukrainian territories and the business environment. There was established the historical pattern of the business environment transformation in the context of inverse institutional transformations: the key role of the state in the industrial entrepreneurship development, which ensures its accelerated development and structural and technological modernization of the economy, and at the same time promotes the monopolization of new promising industries and causes deformation of entrepreneurship's important institutional characteristics in preferential conditions of paternalistic state policy. There was improved the historiographic base of the study of entrepreneurship as a factor of the transformational economy institutional dynamics. The practical result is substantiation of the directions of the state regulatory policy improvement in the entrepreneurial activity field.
