It was shown that mental disorders are essential consequences in epilepsy. Progressive memory loss, behavioral and cognitive impairments observed in patients with epilepsy, negatively affect the quality of life. The effect of such comorbidities are often comparable with the main complications of the disease. Unfortunately, the mechanisms involved in the formation of related mental illness in epilepsy remain largely unclear. Our recent research allowed us to find one of these mechanisms. It is known that thrombin is involved in numerous mechanisms which are important for brain function both in norma land pathological conditions. Protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1), the most common thrombin receptor of the brain, involved in the modulation of animal behavior, memory formation and synaptic plasticity. We have shown that thrombin and PAR1 play an important role in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. PAR1 inhibition provides neuroprotective effect, and reduces the probability of acquired epilepsy and related behavioral disorders later in life. Product Description popup.authors І.В.
