Methods of research: Fourier spectroscopy of infrared absorption of light; spectroscopy of light scattering; Matrix isolation of molecules in cooled inert gases; nuclear magnetic resonance. A two-dimensional correlation analysis of IR absorption spectra of water isolated in an argon matrix, at various temperatures from 9 K to 50 K in the region of valence O-H fluctuations of 3000 - 3800 cm-1 has been carried out. In the registered spectra, the oscillatory bands of the monomer, dimer, and hydrogen bonded clusters from the trimer to the hexamer were discriminated. Peaks falling out of the general scheme of the process of water clustering are most likely due to the oscillation-rotational motion amplified with increasing temperature and cavity volume in the argon matrix.
