Purpose - to identify areas for prospective network of protected areas based on the grounds of the landscape and biotic diversity analysis of the territory of the steppe zone of Ukraine. Research methods - geographical, landscape-ecological, biogeographical, geobotanical, zoological, zoogeographical. Results of the study. In the context of the strategic objectives of the development of the nature reserve fund of Ukraine, the problems of modern spatial organization of the network of protected areas of the steppe zone are considered. The gaps in the existing system of the nature reserve fund of the investigated natural zone at the level of individual physical-geographical oblasts are identified. Proposals for the creation of a network of new and expanding existing protected areas have been grounded for the territories of certain administrative regions located within the steppe zone of Ukraine. Such proposals are based on an assessment of the landscape and biotic diversity of the study area, taking into account the proposals of state executive bodies and local self-government bodies, scientists and the public. The prospects of the proposed changes in the network of protected areas are assessed in the context of ensuring the possibility of achieving 15% of the reserve in 2020 - in accordance with the requirements of the Law of Ukraine "On the main principles (strategy) of the state environmental policy of Ukraine for the period until 2020". Questions of mapping and GIS-visualization of the nature reserve fund of the steppe zone have been worked out on the basis of analysis of the state and trends of the thematic mapping of protected areas in the world. According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, a scheme of an eco-network of the steppe zone has been created. GIS analysis of steppe zone landscapes was carried out to identify potential protected areas based on an assessment of the depth of landscape transformation as a result of anthropogenic activity and the degree of landscape diversity of the study area. The principles and methodological approaches of landscape planning, in particular the conjugate analysis of the results of assessing the significance of landscapes and their sensitivity to various impacts, are applied. At the level of the administrative regions of the study area, the features of the framework conditions of the protected areas foundation are revealed, taking into account the development strategies of these regions and their implementation plans, in particular taking into account the "weak" and "strong" sides of the region (SWOT analysis). The assessment of the territory from the perspective of public importance was carried out with the involvement of existing schemes of the regional planning of the territories, proposals were made for valuable areas that need protection.
