The irradiation of chromium coating in a nanocrystalline state by argon ions leads to a radiation-stimulated isotropic growth of the grain size from the initial 250 nm to 295 nm at a dose of 25 dpa and radiation induced swelling, which begins with the lowest doses (5 dpa) and reaches a value of 0,66 % at a dose of 25 dpa, which occurs with the formation of vacancy voids. Annealing of samples in a vacuum at an irradiation temperature does not lead to changes in the structure of chromium coatings, which indicates their thermal stability at temperatures up to 400 °C. Thus, chromium vacuum arc coatings have high resistance to radiation swelling and can be used to protect zirconium fuel shells from oxidation under conditions of a nuclear reactor.
