The subject of the study is the experience of the formation and operation of Ukrainian Armed Forces from the 20th to the early 21st centuries. The purpose of the project is to develop (on the basis of the analysis of the experience of the origin and formation of Ukrainian Armed Forces, their participation in the armed liberation struggle for national independence, the analysis of the activities of the Ukrainian headquarters, the officer corps, Ukrainian and world military doctrines, similar experiences of other peoples, strategies and warfare practices) the modern scientific military-political and military history of Ukraine of modern times as well as the suggestion of systematic recommendations for political leaders and the military command of Ukraine to create a modern efficient national army capable of confronting an aggressor in a hybrid war. Scientific novelty: For the first time in Ukrainian historiography a comprehensive study of the military-political and military history of Ukraine of the 20th century is carried out, important military events in the territory of Ukraine, their course, specifics and influence on the struggle for Ukraine's independence are analyzed, at the same time these processes are described in the broad context of similar movements of other peoples. Introducing a large number of documents and materials in a scientific circulation will give a chance to more conceptually recreate the military-political and military history of Ukraine of the 20th century, especially those its subjects that have not received proper scientific coverage (for example, the structure and peculiarities of the formation of the army in Ukraine during the struggle for independence, the formation of the Soviet Army in the territory of Ukraine which in 1992 turned into the Armed Forces of Ukraine, their peculiarities and influence on the course of political events, etc.). The executives of the research scientific work proceed from the reasonable belief that a modern efficient national army can only be created taking into account the experience of Ukrainian armed forces of the 20th century, the involvement of the experience of an officer corps of Ukrainian origin in the armed forces of other states and the latest experience of the Ukrainian Armed Forces acquired in confrontation with the Russian hybrid war. The neglect of the aforementioned experience and, consequently, the lack of scientifically grounded strategies in the military and military-historical sphere and the state security policy receive its price which is measured by the cost of losses caused, for example, by contemporary Russian invaders, as well as the cost of the war, and most importantly - unrecoverable value of suffered human losses. Therefore, the development of analytical materials on the issues addressed in the research scientific work is intended to be a significant contribution to the development of the national security strategy and the preservation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the building of a healthy democratic society in which the patriots of Ukraine will grow. Research tasks: - to analyze the historiography of the problem and the sources of the research; - to study and characterize the Ukrainian military formations of the 20th century; - to study the process of creation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the basis of the grouping of the Soviet Army on the territory of Ukraine, their peculiarities and influence on the present; - to analyze the Ukrainian and world military-political and military opinions; - to study the experience of the national liberation struggle and the formation of armed embodiments of other nations; - to select insufficiently elaborated pages of the Ukrainian military history of the 20th century; - to deconstruct quasi-scientific myths that arose in the process of studying the military-political and military history of Ukraine of the 20th century; - to analyze the political, economic, military and information mechanisms of the interference of foreign intelligence services in the living of Ukrainian Armed Forces in the past and present; - to define mechanisms and means of counteracting external informational and political propaganda in the historical field; - on the basis of historical research, to create predictive models for responding to war and military challenges under conditions of hostile aggression; - to study the Ukrainian experience of the so-called "hybrid" war of the last century, to find out by which means it was possible to counteract this form of aggression most effectively. The result of the theme: During the phase 1, the conceptualization of the study "Historical Experience of Ukrainian Armed Forces of the 20th Century in the Context of Contemporary Russian Aggression" was provided, the methods of which are related to the paradigms and methods of Ukrainian science; the theoretical and methodological principles of creation of a coherent picture of the struggle for Ukraine's independence in the 20th century are worked out; similar experiences of other countries have been studied; the concept-categorical apparatus, relevant for the subject of research, is specified; a number of concepts of Ukrainian military-political and military-historical thought of the 20th century are deconstructed. The performed works formed the basis of a number of published thorough studies. In 2017, the following items were prepared: a) 23 scientific articles on the subjects of the research scientific work; b) 1 collection of documents submitted to the press; c) 1 monograph was published and 5 sections of the 2nd monograph were prepared. The results of the research were also announced at 4 conferences. Conclusions The military-political experience of the 20th century, which became the subject of the research scientific work, has political, informational and ideological, psychological and motivational, military-technical, personnel components, each of which has its own peculiarities at different stages of the operation of Ukrainian armed embodiments during the 20th and early 21st centuries. Therefore, the attention of the researchers was directed at the study of these features as well as the development of military art, the similar experience of other peoples, the study of the influence of the moral and political cohesion of society on the effectiveness of the operation of armed troops at different historical stages. All this gave an opportunity to look at the latest Ukrainian military-political history in a different way, to examine critically the usual historical concepts that prevailed in our historiography, to propose new methodological approaches to the coverage of "blind-spots", to develop a pioneering conceptual scheme of the military-political and military history of Ukraine of the 20th century. The current Armed Forces of Ukraine were formed mainly on the basis of transformation of the Armed Forces of the USSR and this fact created and creates certain difficulties of a political and psychological nature connected with the influence of Soviet traditions and behavioral stereotypes. Therefore, the investigative efforts of the research scientific work's executives were directed at finding models for replacing these schemes and motivational complexes, for forming patterns of behavior of an officer and soldier of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who are now directly interacting with the Armed Forces of the NATO countries. The results of the project are novel in comparison with domestic works and publications of foreign scientists. The events that took place in Ukraine during the 20th century were the focus of many domestic researchers. The range of issues that they have investigated and studied usually covers the origins and essence of the armed struggle for Ukraine's independence (M. Kovalchuk, O. Udovychenko, I. Patryliak), the history of individual armed troops (M. Lazarovych, I. Khoma, V. Holubko), separate aspects of military thought (M. Posivnych). Controversial thoughts and conclusions which were formed as a result of lack of sources and because of a random interpretation of the so-called "hybrid war" (M. Kofman, M. Rojanski) did not allow to assess objectively the events in their completeness, to reveal a certain continuity of the historical process with its characteristic principles. The realization of this research scientific work brings us closer to creating a coherent picture of the struggle for Ukraine's sovereignty and its strengthening as well as determining the role of the military factor in this process.
