The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of montmorillonite clays structure on the fire retardant efficiency and the structuring of intumescent compositions of the consist of a copolymer of ethylene with vinylacetate (styrene with isobutylmethacrylate) / ammonium polyphosphate / melamine / pentaerythritol. Research methods: IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The fire protective efficiency of aqueous and organosoluble intumescent coatings for wood according to GOST 16363-98 has been determined. The insignificant effect of the additions of montmorillonite and its derivatives to the aqueous system of the ethylene vinylacetate copolymer / ammonium polyphosphate / melamine / pentaerythritol and the dependence of the fire retardant efficiency of the composition of the styrene-isobutylmethacrylate copolymer on the nanoclay structure have been demonstrated. It has been established that the lowest weight loss and low temperature of outgoing gases ensure the introduction of the most hydrophobic organoclay, montmorillonite, modified with tallow cations of bis-hydroxyethyl methylammonium, into the composition. It has been shown that the best thixotropic indexes are provided by the sodium montmorillonite form for aqueous paints, and montmorillonite modified with tallow bis-hydroxylmethylammоnium cations for organosoluble paints. Based on the research results, the formulations of fire-retardant intumescent coating for wood with improved operational and environmental properties have been developed.
