Karazin popup.description2 The subject of the study is the current state, trends in the changes of the numbers and distribution of rare animal species (fishes, amphibians, birds, semi-aquatic mammals) of aquatic and semi-aquatic ecosystems in steppe zone of Ukraine. The aim of the study is to assess the current status of globally threatened animal wetland and aquatic species (fishes, amphibians, birds, semi-aquatic mammals) in Ukraine and to develop a conservation strategy in a form of species-specific conservation action plans. The method of the study: the integrated method of the survey of wetlands and aquatic ecosystems was used which incorporates several standard count techniques for focal groups of vertebrates. The results of the study. The current status of key threatened animal species of the wetlands of steppe zone of Ukraine was assessed. A classification of rare species based upon the type of their response to the impact of unfavourable factors was proposed. The classification was applied to develop a conservation strategy for rare and threatened species in steppe zone of Ukraine. The strategy was used to prepare national and regional action plans for the conservation of rare and threatened species of fishes, amphibians, birds and mammals in Ukraine.
