Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology popup.description2 In patients with breast cancer stage I-II, new molecular criteria of tumor heterogeneity associated with the peculiarities of clinical course have been identified. The variability of the expression of the mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18-2, which is a marker of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, is determined in cells of luminal A and basal subtypes of breast cancer. The highest expression of S18-2 was observed in the tissue of high-proliferative tumors of luminal A and basal subtypes. It was first established that the expression of Na/I simporter (NIS) that contributes to the iodine entry into cells representing the necessary component of the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones in tumor tissue correlates directly with the disease stage, the development of metastases in regional lymph nodes and depends on the proliferative activity and adhesion properties of tumor cells in patients with luminal A, luminal B and basal subtypes of breast cancer. It has been shown that the overall 5-year survival rate of patients with breast cancer luminal B and basal subtypes is worse in the presence of NIS, N-cadherin and CD44 expression in tumors in the absence of E-cadherin and high proliferative activity of tumor cells. The obtained data indicate that the expression of S18-2 and NIS in tumor cells can be used as additional criterion for predicting the clinical course of the breast cancer of certain molecular subtypes being the basis for the determination of informative predictive parameters, which will improve the existing anti-tumor treatment regimens.
