Research goal is to determine the optical characteristics of polarization gratings recorded in new azobenzene based materials; to analyze the suitability of these materials for applications in dynamic holography and design of optical diffraction elements. Research methods: the experiment with a standard setup of polarization holography have been performed (holographic recording of polarization gratings was carried out, their optical characteristics have been determined); the matrix polarization analysis of the diffracted light field was used for the theoretical evaluation of the phase modulation of the recorded polarization gratings and the induced birefringence. Polarization gratings in available samples of azobenzene molecular glasses have been recorded for different polarizations of the recording beams. Characterization of the obtained polarization gratings have been carried out, in particular, the diffraction efficiency and angular selectivity of these gratings have been determined. The recording of polarization gratings through the glass substrate of the samples of azobenzene molecular glasses was investigated. It has been found that with this geometry of the recording, only the anisotropic gratings are formed, and the surface relief gratings do not appear. In this geometry of the holographic recording, the consecutive writing/erasure cycles (more than 100 times) have been performed in the same area of the sample. Neither any memory effects nor the deterioration of the diffraction efficiency of the recorded gratings have been detected. On the basis of experimental data, the amplitudes of the phase modulations of the anisotropic and relief gratings and the magnitude of the induced birefringence have been calculated. Possible ways of improvement of azobenzene molecular glasses as materials for dynamic holography have been suggested.
