Research object: public relations in the sphere of realization of tasks and achievement of the goals of rural development in the EU and Ukraine. The purpose of the study: to justify the ways and mechanisms of rural development in Ukraine on the basis of harmonization of interests and goals of agricultural production, rural population and the whole society, activation and support of rural life and initiatives of rural communities using the approaches of the European Union and taking into account the specifics of national realities. Methods of research: economic-mathematical, graphic, monographic, statistical, systematization and classification, expert evaluations, comparative and spatial analysis, abstract-logical, system approach. The results: generalized principles of rural development in the European Union, forms and methods for achieving its goals; It has been established that the concept of "rural proofing" ("village-centering") is used in EU inter-sectoral policy and should be practiced in Ukraine; tjustified he expediency of orientation the domestic policy of rural development to strengthening the village's ability to make a significant contribution to economic growth and public goods production and to form a similar to European system for the development of strategies and program objectives for balanced agricultural and rural development in Ukraine. The strategic directions and mechanisms are grounded: improvement of land relations on the basis of European socially-oriented approaches to their regulation with the purpose of deconcentration of land tenure and land use in order to achieve the goals of agrarian and rural development; qualitative renavation and realization of human capital in the rural areas with the introduction of educational models and innovative network structures for the adult population, as well as increasing the availability of basic services; increasing the viability and competitiveness of farming in the rural territories, especially in terms of facilitating the establishment of a European farmer family pattern; consolidation of rural communities, preservation and implementation of their self-governing functions in the context of reforming local self-government and territorial organization of power. The results of the study were realized in the proposals for the Medium-Term Plan of the Government's priority actions by 2020; comments and proposals for draft legislative and other normative legal acts, a number of scientific and analytical materials submitted to the central authorities of Ukraine. The results of the study were published in the collective monograph "Implementing the European approaches to Rural Development in Ukraine" and a number of articles published in scientific journals and other publications.
