The purpose of the work is to find out the systemic limitations of modernizing the financial sector in Ukrainian economy arising from institutional traps and to substantiate the conceptual foundations and practical mechanisms for modernizing the financial sector. Methods of research - scientific abstraction; analysis and synthesis; structural-functional; statistical comparisons; methods of generalization, samples, expert evaluations, extrapolation; historical method. Results of the study: the dominant and contradictory aspects of the institutionalization of the financial sector in modern economic systems are revealed. It is determined the special role of institutional determinants in the evolution of the financial sector of Ukrainian economy, which allowed to substantiate the mechanism of institutional corrections of the financial sector of Ukraine's economy to restore its productive functions, which contains three components: strengthening of institutional bases of regulation, restoration of trust to regulators and financial intermediaries, ensuring an adequate level of protection rights of creditors. Novelty: the scientific significance of the results obtained is determined by the fact that they complement and broaden the perceptions of the specifics of the institutional transformations of the financial sector in the small, open transformational economy, which is at the stage of de-industrialization. The practical significance of the results obtained is determined by their focus on restoring the productive (capital-forming) function of the financial sector to the economic development of Ukraine through institutional corrections (upgrades): strengthening the institutional framework for the functioning of the national financial market, restoring confidence in regulators and financial intermediaries, and ensuring an adequate level of protection of creditors' rights.
