Aim: assessment of the ecological status of representative sites of water bodies at the Dnipro and Dniester basins and identification of the level of excess of the natural background of pollution due to technogenic stress on water bodies. Methods: analysis and systematization of scientific and theoretical data on the quantitative and qualitative composition of natural surface waters; methods of calculating the environmental rules for water quality and integrated water pollution indexes for individual indicators. The main results: a modern ecological assessment of water quality was performed at representative sites of water bodies in the Dnipro and Dniester basins. Ecological rationing of water quality was carried out and its compliance with the modern ecological state was established. An excess of the background pollution level was established and a list of priority pollutants was determined. A direct relationship between water quality and the level of technogenic impact of industries and municipal services on individual sections of water bodies has been proved. It is chosen the sites of water objects of Dnieper and Dniester demanding prime realization of actions for protection of waters by sewage treatment from harmful impurities for the purpose to support of self-cleaning ability of water objects and to provide different types of water use. The results are recommended for implementation in the development of long-term and urgent measures of water management in certain places of water use. Applications: water supply and water treatment.
