The technology of steel modification by yttrium has been developed, which allows to improve the composition, size and character of the distribution of non-metallic inclusions. As a result of the statistical processing of an array of experimental data on the characteristics of a metal melt, an interconnection of an important variable of other variables in the conditions of combined oxygen conversion was established, which allowed to significantly reduce the cost of chemical analysis. It has been established that the modification of metal by yttrium leads to positive changes in the nature, shape, size and nature of the distribution of nonmetallic inclusions. At the same time, in a metal containing 0,02% Y, only oxysulfides are found, whereas in the metal containing 0,01% Y there are still manganese sulfides. Increasing the concentration of yttrium by more than 0.02% does not introduce further changes in the nature of the macrostructure of the ingot. Investigation of the process of oxygen conversion in a converter with combined purge using statistical methods allowed to obtain the correlation of carbon content in a metal melt with oxygen and phosphorus content, which significantly reduces the cost of conducting chemical analysis.
