The object of the research is the customary law of rural population of Middle Polissia in the late 19th century till the 80's of the 20th century. The objective of the research is creation of the monograph that provides an integrated characteristic of customary and legal culture of the population of Middle Polissia with consideration for local way-of-life peculiarities and modern transformational processes. The chronology of the research covers the period from the end of the 19th century to the 80's of the 20th century. It is conditioned by the formulation of the problem of the research, in particular, the available archival and literature data, as well as the information received from the representatives of older generation. Owing to their parents or their own experience, these people knew about the features of the local former legal norms and during the Soviet period, that is, the period which is not so far from our present, when the observed traditions underwent active transformation. The methodological foundation of the work - the principles of historicism, systematicity and continuation that provide an opportunity to analyze phenomena of the past and their changes in the course of historical development. The scientific search was carried out using structural and comparative-historical methods. Moreover, the method of reconstruction was also applied. The methodology of collecting factual material was carried out in the course of field ethnographic researches based on the interviews as the way of obtaining information using a thematic questionnaire with the help of audio recording and photo fixation. In addition, the methods of primary processing and systematization of the collected material were also used. On the basis of published sources and collected field materials, for the first time in national ethnology, this research provides the attempt to analyze historical and ethnographic characteristics of the place and role of norms of customary law in the sphere of traditional and way-of-life culture of the Middle Polissia taking into account dynamics of changes in cultural phenomena during the 20th century, as well as peculiarities of their reflection in terms of communicative ties with the churches of Orthodox and Catholic faiths. A wide range of archival sources and field ethnographic materials on customary law of Middle Polissia was introduced into scientific turnover.
