Such shortened genes encode enzymes with cytoplasmic localization (while native enzymes have mitochondrial localization). The resulting recombinant strains produced, in different fermentation conditions, 1.5-4 times more glycerol than the wild type strain, but the combination of these modifications in the genome of one recombinant strain did not provide a further increase in the level of glycerol production. Overexpression of the ILV2 native gene encoding acetolacetate synthase with mitochondrial localization did not provide enhancement of glycerol production in S. cerevisiae.
