Studies have been carried out on the modification of tungsten coatings of different thicknesses, which are considered as a potential alternative to the elements that will be interacted with the plasma in the thermonuclear reactor ITER. It has been found that application of thermal loads which are close to the tungsten melting threshold, surface morphology develops mainly through melting and re-solidification processes during plasma processing. The modified layer includes a mixed substrate coating material. The possibility of effectively alloying of substrate material by tungsten is shown. As a result of the plasma treatment in the modified layer, the concentration of tungsten achieved the several weight percentages. A local increase of the concentration of tungsten in the near-surface layer could significantly reduce the coefficient of sputtering of the steel surface. On the basis of the results, predictive estimates will be done regarding the functioning of the elements of the diverter and the first wall of the thermonuclear reactor, which will be in contact with powerful plasma streams.
