The objects of the study are the Black Sea populations of marine mammals. The purpose of the current research work was to assess the status of the Black Sea populations of marine mammals in 2017. The report presents results on cetacean studies that were performed using coastal-based and vessel-based visual observations, method of photo-identification of individuals as well as the monitoring of cetacean stranding events, using citizen scientists. Studies of the cetaceans showed that they were unevenly distributed in the Black Sea, especially the bottlenose dolphins, their encounter rates were extremely low in the open waters, and their overall occurrence was also low. The short-beaked common dolphin dominated in all waters, including shelf waters of the north-western part of the Black Sea, but there were cases when harbour porpoises were the most numerous species. Cetacean strandings in the northwestern Black Sea were significantly more frequent than in previous years, due to entanglements in fishing gear, and probably an infectious disease of unknown etiology. The results of the studies allowed us to recognize the water areas, which are important for cetaceans and for their protection, such as the area of the Dzharylgachsky Bay and Dzharylgach Island, waters near the Zmiinyi Island and the Danube Delta. It was found that cetaceans regularly use waters of sea ports for foraging. Cetacean interactions with fishing gear were also investigated. Cetaceans represent the highest link of the trophic chains in marine ecosystems, these mammals are important indicators of their statuses, so our results will help to develop the scientific basis for the protection of these vulnerable and endangered marine mammals.
