The purpose of the research is to prepare recommendations for the establishment of a representative network of marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean, particularly in the Weddell Sea. To achieve the goal, the following tasks have been accomplished: - analysis of the role of the international network of nature-protected territories in the interconnected nature-human system; - Analysis of marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean as one of the mechanisms for the conservation and restoration of the biodiversity of the world's oceans; - definition of the concept of a representative network of marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean; - Preparation of recommendations for the establishment of a representative network of marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean, particularly in the Weddell Sea. The objects of the study are the nature protection areas of the Southern Ocean. The subject of the study are indicators of the status of ocean ecosystems. The method of the study is a comparative analysis.
