Objectives are to determine the fundamental principles of SOW conversion. Methods of research are standard methods for studying solid fuels and new methods for evaluating the processes of air gasification of SOW and steam coal. The results of researches on determination of physical and chemical characteristics of SOW thermal conversion are generalized. The influence of the feedstock properties on the heat capacity and efficiency of the gasifier in relation to the yield, composition, and calorific value of the obtained gas has been determined taking into account the data on the optimization of the operation of the new gasifier (of CETI of NASU) on air and steam-air blast with the use and without the use of plasma torches. On the basis of the obtained basic characteristics of gasification for different types of feedstock, there were developed, calculated, and optimized the principal circuits for combined production of electric and thermal energy, as well as chemical compounds with SOW gasification. Taking into account the analysis of the obtained results of tests of the existing equipment, the material and thermal balance of power plants have been prepared and optimized in order to achieve maximum electric and total efficiency. Principal circuits of new cogeneration power plants with SOW gasification in reversed dense bed, bubble fluidized bed, and circulating fluidized bed (CFB) are developed: with an electric generator driven by an internal combustion engine and an electrochemical generator (ECG) on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). It is determined that the use of the technology of plasma air gasification in reversed dense bed and the CFB technology instead of the technology of air gasification in reversed dense bed will increase the electric capacity of the SOFC ECG from 5 kW to 30 kW and to 17 kW, respectively.
