The goal of research is to study the physico-geographical features of the Western Podillya for the development of optimization measures for the functioning of natural-economic geosystems. According to the goal and objectives of the research, the following research methods were used: system analysis, cartographic, expeditionary, statistical-analytical, historiographic analysis, comparative-geographical, mathematical, time slices, retrospective, descriptive, observations etc. To assess the anthropogenic transformation of geosystems in the region, the methods of V. Anuchin, M. Lemeshev, K. Hoffmann, P. Shishchenka were used. Processing of analytical and statistical information, as well as tabular and graphical (map charts, diagrams), the interpretation of the results was carried out using computer programs Corel Drav and Microsoft Excel. The scientific novelty of the study is as follows: the chronology of the process of settlement and development of the Podilsky Tovtry territory has been analyzed for the first time. The spatial-temporal peculiarities of the development of the settlement load are established and anthropogenic transformation of the Tovtry region is estimated. Dividing into districts of the territory according to the degree of anthropogenic transformation was carried out. The concept (optimization model) of balanced development of the region is proposed. A retrospective analysis of the study of geoecotons was carried out by scientists from various fields of natural sciences and formed on this basis a holistic view of geoecotons as specific formations of the material world; the definition of geoecoton as an ecological-geographical category is specified and the expediency of geoecoton wider use in geographical science is substantiated; a model of geoecoten was developed; for the first time, the idea of the West-Podilsky hill as a transition zone was substantiated or geographic ecotone; the role of geoecoctons in human life is determined, in particular - in the residential development of the territories of Western Podillya hill; the degree of manifestation of the residential effect of contour lines is revealed with which the formation of a special type of settlements is associated - geoecotonous; four stages of development of natural-reserved fund are defined and its modern structure is estimated; a set of tables and cartographic models has been created; the optimization paths of natural-reserved fund are outlined. For the first time the preconditions for the formation of meadow-steppe landscapes of Western Podillya were determined; the history of the development of meadow-steppe landscapes during the anthropogenic period was traced; changes in meadow-steppe landscapes have been illustrated in recent centuries; the structure of individual meadow-steppe landscapes has been studied by the method of key plots and their charts have been compiled; the modern state of meadow-steppe landscapes of Western Podillya and the direction of their development are highlighted. Practical utility. The results obtained by the authors can be used by environmental organizations to address the challenges associated with the protection and effective use of natural resources in the region. The proposed concept of balanced development is used by the Ternopil Oblast State Administration and the Oblast Council to develop a program of social and economic development of the region. The separate results are used by the Ternopil forestry enterprise and its forest district (Zbarazh, Skalat, Mshanets) to supplement and clarify the current forestry development program of the region. The results of the research on the study of the geoecotons of the Western Podillya were used to prepare the final report on the inventory of geological and hydrological objects of the natural-reserved fund of the Ternopil region in accordance with the agreement with the scientific center of the reserve reserve management and studies of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ukraine. Data on newly identified sites of some rare plant species can be used to prepare information about them in the following editions "The Red Book of Ukraine", when concluding regional "Field guide…", "Book of reference…" chorological atlases etc. The obtained data on the study of the lunar-steppe landscapes can become a scientific basis for solving problems related to the protection and rational use of land resources (in particular, in the planning and implementation of agro-meliorative measures in watershed underdeveloped territories, which are specific in hydrogeological terms) and to clarify the future prospects for the rationalization of management of natural resources within the Western Podillya.
